I decided on Top Flr out of all the restaurants in Atlanta I could've chosen for my birthday. I was tempted to relive my amazing experience at Canoe from the year before, but curiosity won out and I went for something new. After checking out the reviews on rateclubs about this place being romantic, I thought I'd give it a try. Canoe would have been a much better choice. Not that I hated Top Flr--I just didn't love the scratched up plates and the overall dinginess of the place. The waitstaff were dressed in plaid shirts and jeans. Not knocking it, but it definitely wasn't what I expected and hoped for on my birthday. I don't mind the modern, laid-back feel, but when it comes at the expense of sleekness and sophistication, then I wonder what all the fuss is about. Even though the environment didn't impress me, the food did. The hummus I had for an appetizer was nothing out of the ordinary, but the scallops and sweet potato puree were divine. I literally cleaned my plate. There was a lengthy turnaround on my entree order, so the waiter gave us one dessert on the house. I chose the lemon pound cake with berries which was really yummy. I also really enjoyed the size of the portions offered. I didn't feel overwhelmed by the food in front of me, but I didn't feel cheated either. Definitely didn't want to leave my birthday dinner feeling fat. I regret that I didn't come here when it was dark out. It probably would have made the scene slightly more romantic, and maybe the design, furniture and plateware flaws wouldn't have been so noticeable. I don't think I'll be curious enough to come back and find out, but at least I don't have to wonder about the food.

Sisters seems to fall into two extremes the times I've been there: -a Friday or Saturday night with only a handful of people hanging out on either floor or -an event, like the party after OutFest or the night before Thanksgiving, when it's packed and crazy and really jumping. Is there no in between? I don't know. I guess I don't go here often enough to know. I don't mind stopping in after a dinner out just to have a drink. On its low key nights, it's good for that. You can actually sit down at a table and hear your friends/girlfriend talk. I hear the brunch is good and I should try it. It's true what everyone else says about the drinks and the decor. The cat lady posters bring the lulz. And, as lesbians are quite predictable creatures, there will always be the moment each night when the DJ plays something like "Livin' on a Prayer" and they all shout the lyrics and fingerpoint. Oh, ladies.

MJQ feels like a dark garage or cave. Yet I find this venue to be a refreshing change from the Buckhead scene. I am always highly impressed with the music (great DJ's) and the crowd is very peculiar. Really, entering MJQ like being thrown in a jar of mixed nuts (in a cave). I've met Emory students to professionals to indie/emo types, to a drag queen I chatted with while washing hands in the bathroom. I'm actually torn between three and four stars, because I've had such uniquely fun experiences here. Okay, we'll go with the fourth :o)
