Surprisingly Impressed! And they've only been open for a week! I walk by this place on my way to work and have watched the empty building for months - waiting for life to appear. Hearing that it was going to be restored into a restaurant that actually matches the sign above it, I was pretty excited. (Smaaahrt move!) I mean, Swan Oyster Depot is the dominating-lunch-only-always-crowded-and-super-tou risty seafood place on Polk - thank you Mayes for movin' in! My husband and I wondered in on Saturday night to an almost full restaurant around 6:30 for some apps and drinks. I've always loved the space - warm, illustrious, and swanky. They have maintained this charming feeling overall. There is a good start to the interior - but a little cheesy...I'm guessing from it trying to be a late-night music club too? (Some of the furniture is trying too hard and looks cheap...giraffe print chaise-bed thing???? um, no need for it.) Lets get to the good stuff - they have a pretty good drink menu with fun house cocktails. Generous portions, but on the pricier side. We shared the Hawaiian Poke and the hamachi carpaccio (the hamachi recco'd by our cocktail waitress). WOW - so delicious, gorgeous, and unique twist to these dishes. The poke had a lovely and perfectly portioned white truffle oil to it, along with a salad of pickled onions and pickles accompanied by wonton crisps. Delicate flavors that work together surprisingly well together. It was a lovely dish. And, the hamachi was equally unique and delicious. Served on a bed of sprouts, the fresh hamachi is coated in a spicy mayo-kind of sauce and topped with a little scoop of lemon sorbet... just so fun and again, brilliantly balanced flavors. If these apps are any indication of the rest of the menu, it will no doubt make a name for itself on food alone. I'm really looking forward to exploring more of it and watching the place settle into its own. A few new restaurant speed bumps that will hopefully get ironed out soon - service was a little slow, and with the door open and AC on it was chilly in the front area. The crowd was interesting too with a number of cougar clans...

My favorite is the brunch: Smoked Salmon Benedict with Potato Pancakes, and Mixed Field Greens ($12). It's reasonably priced and pleasant to eat in the Garden area on a lazy Sunday.

I like National Mechanic's for the fact that it's in Old City but doesn't suburbanites with pointy toed shoes.  That fact alone means it wins. Cheap drinks interesting decor fast service. I ordered a national burger medium rare and that sucka was closer to medium-well.  But it's not enough to make me not wanna go back. edit:  I've been back many times since and really like it I'm changing my review from 4-5 stars
