You and I have both been to theme bars that bring Satan's abyss to mind. Horrible costumes, stupid shows, and prices that would make a Rockefeller blush. Jekyll & Hyde comes to mind, now that I think about it... This bar is not one of them. Okay, the prices are high ($6-7 for bottled beers, $10-20 for their signature drinks), but the atmosphere couldn't be more fun. There are over seven or eight carnival games (dunk tank, test-your-strength, knock-the-bottles, etc.), pool, traditional carnival food, and upscale munchies for those of a more delicate palate. Conveniently located off of Union Square, this is a great place to come with a group of friends for a fun time. It's not an everyday place by any stretch, but BEER/DRINK SELECTION: Four-five microbrews. They make their killing on the delicious (but expensive) mixed drinks. FOOD SELECTION: From hot dogs to pretzels to sliders to Wolfgang Puck serving you foie gras with caviar from a Ming-dynasty platter. Okay, it's not nearly THAT extensive, but for a bar, it ain't half-bad. SERVICE: Good. It gets crowded, but the crew does their best to keep it moving. They WILL try to sucker you into some of those games, though, and at $4 a pop, that can hit the ol' pocketbook mighty hard. A tip: check out the "Funhouse". It's really a dance floor with a small bar inside. When the front house gets way packed, this place tends to be less jammed. Course, you might not be up for dancing after climbing the five flights to the bar itself...

I usually like the places that so many rateclubsers do, so I was more than happy to go with the plan when a friend suggested we hit Bob bar on Friday night! Also, I kind of like the sound of the name. Bob. Bobbiddy bobbity bob bar. We ate at the newly opened Aamchi Pao in the west village, and our spirits slightly dampened by the rain and the mediocre vada pao, we headed to bob bar in 2 separate cabs. Cab 1 with 4 of my friends reached at 10:40, and the remaining 5 of us landed up five minutes later. We were charged 5 bucks cover. My rating always drops half a notch for a place with cover, so we're standing firm at 4.5 stars. We enter, and order drinks. Weak. At 3.5 stars now. The place is about 10% full. Then I realized that they hadn't charged our friends any cover! Nada, nothing, zero. I went out to pick a bone with the bouncer. He shooed me away, mumbling something about charging cover when the bar crowd exceeds some fixed number of people. Unless that number is 12, I'm not buying this story. 2 stars and no more. Boo. I might come back here to give Bobbidy a second chance because the music was decent, but not anytime soon!

I love this place! It's always a struggle when I come in to order something new... I would order the Chicken Mole every time except every other item I have ordered has also exceeded my expectations. The menu is fixed price, which I totally appreciate as it's reasonable and I always have to take food home so the portions are huge. I also love the summer margarita special- $5 house margs! Not that I don't get the specialty drinks, which are also delicious. I just love a special! Plus the house margs are awesome. The bar itself is great, and the bartenders have always been super nice and friendly! Generally I like everything about this place- can you tell? The atmosphere is so enjoyable that even if the food/drink was sub-par, I would still hang at this spot.
