National Mechanics is the kind of place that draws a certain crowd: friendly, fun, you know the type, where conversation with strangers are a breeze and the atmosphere is energetic. Alcohol is alcohol as far as I'm concerned, so I go (and return to) places for more than merely what they pour. That being said, I found that they made decent standard mixed drinks --- and yes, a bar can easily mess up the simplest. My wife insists that last night's was the best made Cosmo around (actually, she said it was the best ever but that may have been the alcohol talking, no pun intended). A standout for me was the bar food. Particularly the wings: Hands down the best wings I've tasted in all of Philly. Crispy and meaty, with outstanding honey BBQ sauce. Having passed the test I will definitely come back to this place with an appetite (and my usual thirst) to see what else they can do. I have a feeling I won't be disappointed.

It's about that time. I've just finished an awesome burger & fries at the Corner Bistro on Jane. I'm feeling a little full but still have room for dessert. First I need to walk off the burger, fries & beer. It's easy to get distracted on the journey to fulfill a sweet tooth but if you know what you want and where to get it, there are no obstacles. Granted if you're walking along 14th street to get to The Park, there's DVF, Stella McCartney, Earl Jeans ... and all shopping does is exhaust you which you'll then need sustenance to go on! Once you've done a little damage at the shops maybe walk through High Line Park up to 18th Street and enter The Park. It can be a bit of a scene in the sense that there's always a crowd. Groups, dates, prowlers, they're all here-top notch people watching here. Of course I prefer the atrium. It's gorgeous to sit in the atrium in any season. So you can imagine the ambiance on a sunny, rainy or snowy day. Order the banana wontons with caramel & chocolate dipping sauces. They're beignets so I don't know why they call them wontons but they're heavenly. Dip on in either the warm caramel or chocolate dipping sauces and ... I know it's just fried banana but they do something to that batter or the oil they're frying them in because they're just perfect.

This review is for what XIV calls the Veranda (which is a French cousin of the American patio). I came here for a private SmashBox studios/entertainment industry event so the the crowd swayed toward model types mixed with "who do you know" entertainment folks. So we just walked in. The bartenders were friendly and prompt. The overall atmosphere was lively and the decor was a glitzy version of modern French chateau. Drinks left something to be desired, but were decent by L.A. standards. In the evenings, they sometimes place a plastic patio cover over the entire Veranda so no one is freezing on a cool SoCal evening (i.e. 70 degrees or colder) evening. Parking in the surrounding area is an absolute nightmare on weekend evenings. Valet is intensely busy unless your car costs $$$,$$$ or you know someone. I recommend this place, it's prettier and posher feeling than most places.
