Well i went this last Saturday and was able to get in free via guestlist thanks to Derek at derek@axessentertainme.... We were given access to the vip rooftop area which is reserved for just bottleservice patrons. The club consists of a few floors so its def a different experience from your standard one-two floor clubs. even more interesting was how the crowd and ambience changed from floor to floor. the rooftop was pretty empty when we got there around 1045 so we went down to the basement floor. it was contrastly packed, lots of people dancing, and the music was bumpin. i preferred the music on the basement level because it was mostly hip hop. later, we went back up to the rooftop(which you have to have a stamp to access the elevator) and it was more packed. but nobody was dancing, mostly chatting. it seemed more pretentious on the rooftop and only a few friendly people- most ppl were either just 21 with a few older men, lots of international students from sweden that nite, not very diverse on the rooftop. after our people watching, we were kinda bored, so went back down to the basement. the ppl in the basement were def more diverse (which is cool) but lots of guys trying to pick up on girls. people also seemed less snobby. the club was okay i thought, it was mostly interesting to go from floor to floor and see how the crowd changed, it was like a social experiment. bartenders in the basement level were nice, say hi to Law!

You know in the movie "House Party" where they just walk into the room and immediately start dancing and high-fiving everyone? This, my friends, is the Velvet Room. Unpretentious, fun, wild. Everyone's dancing and having a wild time. The minute I stepped in I started dancing. I usually need a drink or two to loosen me up, but not here. The music (or shall I say DJ) was great! He even played the Luke 30-minute workout!!!! Say whaaaat!!!! Hell to the yes. I'm from Cali and I haven't heard the Luke 30-minute Workout since college, and that was 6 years ago. True, it IS located in a shopping market plaza and when my friend took me here I was like, "Okaaay." Double that when I saw an old couple walk up in line wearing matching purple velvet outfits. I was at that point ready to leave. But so glad I didn't. We had soooo much fun. Even got invited inside the DJ booth. Hey now. Funny story: I asked the bartender to make me and my friend a cape cod w/ belvedere. He said that they didn't carry belvedere. What kind of GD club doesn't have belvy?! Anyway, my friend had never tried Ciroc vodka before so I asked the bartender if they had Ciroc. He glanced at me for a looong time, kinda gave me the side-eye and said, "Yeeah. We carry Ciroc." What was his problem, right? Later on, when I was looking at pictures I took, I found a picture of me and my friend posted right at that bar and lo and behold, right behind me was a row of Ciroc bottles. Bottom line: had fun, got crunk, got drunk, the end.

For me, this place has been hit or miss. It's all a matter of what type of crowd is there on any particular night and what you are into. Some nights, the place is great, with a decent mix of people and good music, while on other nights it's frat boy city. The last time I went to Jake's, my friend and I left after 10 minutes because we became so aggravated with the extremely loud, rude, and obnoxious college meathead/bimbo crowd-- after being blatantly shoved and pushed out of the way by the 4th or 5th drunk guy in a row, we decided it was time to get out of there. Asides from the sort of unfortunate people JD attracts, it's a fun bar-- good decor and atmosphere, good music, good bartenders (if you can actually get close to the bar) and some great deals ($2 drinks for fine ladies like myself on Wednesdays).
