Shame. Shame. Shame. I lived in the neighborhood when Parish came in. I rejoiced when they re-purposed the building instead of tearing it down. I applauded with my little tiny mental hands as I watched them do a steady business...but I didn't patronize. Shame. Shame. Shame on me. The beau and I walked to Pure the other night (more on that in another review) and on the way home, stopped in for a cocktail. I was wowed by the fantastical "band" - two guys casually jamming at just the right volume and voices that entranced. I was in love with the space and what they'd done, and then I was enchanted by the bartendress and the menu. I'd avoided Parish for so long because I don't "do" cajun. My sensitive belly doesn't like peppers or hot bits and my pallet has abhored shrimp and its kin since I was a tot. I was so, so wrong to judge. A controlled but full menu had me hanging my head, while a later visit to the market downstairs had me falling in love. I'll be frequenting the market if not the restaurant (a fuller post when that happens) and while I'm tempted not to sing it's praises lest you all converge and ruin it for me, I'm going to anyway. Don't be a doof like me. Stop, try, revel in its splendor and the staffs outstanding hospitality.

I never made it inside Primal. I arrived at the doors around 12:10 am on August 8, 2009, just after midnight. My friend's friend's friend worked at Primal and promised us that we could get in for a discounted rate. The bouncer disagreed. According to the bouncer at 12:10 am, the cover was $40 for women, and $60 for men. Seriously? I always get into all other Atlanta clubs for free. I have a number of theories on why they jacked up the prices for my group: 1. bad guy to girl ratio. (2:3) 2. Maybe the bouncer saw that I wore Louboutins. 3. There was a huge line with about 45 people who desperately wanted to get in. The parking itself was already $5. I decided to save my money and go home instead.

Bars like this are the reason why you were excited to turn 21. I may not live in a nightlife mecca like NYC, but I certainly know a great bar when I see one, and this is the best bar I have ever been to. A nightclub on a pier with a docked party boat- sounds good to me. Oh, and the boat was sunken and salvaged, pretty fuckin cool. More on that later. My one and only visit to Frying Pan was on a warm summer night, the Dj's were spinning really good music on the pier, the crowd was young and pretty hip, and they certainly knew what to do when faced with a dance floor. There were little tables on a balcony above the pier to sit at and get away from the swarms of people and maze of velvet ropes below and take in the Manhattan skyline towering right overhead. I was already loving it, then I discovered the ship... Picture it, this ship sinks, is later salvaged, partially gutted inside, left more or less as is, and turned into a nightclub. Everything is covered with rust, and there are tons of dark tunnels and rooms to explore/make out in. But head down a staircase, and there's the dance floor- the gutted engine room, rusted pipes and machinery surrounding the empty center. One small spotlight hangs from a catwalk overhead, while a mist of water rains down on the crowds. It's loud, dark, and a little scary, but you've got to see it to believe it. The cover is $10, and the drinks are pricey- at least by Seattle standards. But I'm not complaining. The 4:00 a.m. cut off time was loosely enforced, and the Dj's were still spinning and people were still dancing while the sun was coming up- well into the hour of 5:00. This, again, is why you were so looking forward to to being 21; you knew one day you'd find a bar like this.
